MissIon & Goals
Our mission is to establish the University of Michigan as an undisputed global academic leader in the field of environmental sustainability.
Toward that end, the Graham Institute serves as a Boundary Organization* that:
- Catalyzes research and analysis that informs public and private sector decision makers, through the sponsorship of integrated assessments
- Connects U-M research and education efforts to campus sustainability operations
- Partners with schools, colleges and other centers and institutes to connect and coordinate education and research programs across campus
- Catalyzes new research to inform public and private sector decision makers
Our approaches include:
- Supporting development of critical sustainability policy analyses
- Enhancing interdisciplinary educational offerings at the graduate and undergraduate level
- Seeding new centers of excellence to fill gaps
- Creating collaborative research opportunities involving stakeholders both within and outside the University
They draw their incentives from and produce outputs for principals in both domains, and they internalize
the provisional and ambiguous character of the distinctions between these domains. It is hypothesized
that the presence of boundary organizations facilitates the transfer of usable knowledge between science
and policy.
